One of the most frequently asked questions by our customers is
“What kind of material do I pick for my countertops?”
So today, we decided to go ahead and break up the general differences, the pros & the cons of the two most used options:
Granite & Quartz
Well, the first and biggest difference is that Granite is a purely natural stone, while Quartz countertops also feature a lot of natural stone, they are ultimately an engineered or man-made stone.
Quartz is heavier than Granite, and therefore, Quartz ismore durable and does not crack easily. In fact, Quartz is nearly indestructible!
Quartz is also relatively easy to clean as it is not porous like granite. This stone is easy to maintain and does not get stained.
However, when cooking unlike Granite, Quartz can be damaged by excessive heat, so you must always use heating pads.
Granite, being a 100% natural stone, gives the possibility to choose from hundreds of beautiful and unique colors of granite slabs. This stone does not fade when exposed to sunlight and that makes it a great choice for outdoors.
Granite is a very absorbent material and if it is not sealed correctly, it can absorb liquids, and hold bacteria. If it is properly sealed, Granite countertops are very durable. However, Granite stains very easily!
And finally let’s cut to the chase, shall we?
Quartz is generally a bit more expensive than Granite, however sometimes it is worth the penny as Granite tends to be brittle and you might have a bad experience with breakage at install or might not get that seamless look when having more than one slab together!
Of course, both options have their pros & cons!
Word to the wise: Always evaluate the specific material that you choose, based on the MSDS (material specs data sheet), and/ or ask your manufacturer questions regarding the characteristics and performance of the selected material.
